Observation Data Dialogue

The Observation Data dialog is opened via the Observation Point toolbar. The dialog has four sections:

"Observation Data" dialogue.

Observation Points

The Observation points tab contains a list of all observation points and wells (Well BC and MLW) defined in the model, along with possible set names (Caption) and reference values and confidence intervals. In the list, visibility of chart curves and other visualization options can be turned on and off for each point by checking or deactivating the respective check box.

Reference values for the process variables corresponding to the Problem Class (e.g., Flow, Heat...) can be added clicking on the "Green Plus" symbol. Such values and their confidence intervals are added in columns. The "Red Cross" icon, on the other hand, deletes the columns corresponding to a particular Process variable.

Reference values (RefValue) and confidence intervals (Interval) can be edited directly in the list by double-clicking the respective entry.

Observation points can be grouped by clicking on the "Group selected observation points" icon, after selecting them from the list.

Observation Points and Groups of Observation Points can be used directly in FePEST. In the case of the Groups, during the import in FePEST (Observation Definitions), the user can decide which groups should participate in PEST's optimization.

Budget domains

The Budget domains  tab contains a list of groups for which the Budget printing has been activated, along with possible set names (Caption) and reference values and confidence intervals. In the list, visibility of chart curves and other visualization options can be turned on and off for each group by checking or deactivating the respective check box.

Content domains

The Content domains  tab contains a list of groups for which the Content printing has been activated, along with possible set names (Caption) and reference values and confidence intervals. In the list, visibility of chart curves and other visualization options can be turned on and off for each group by checking or deactivating the respective check box.

Curve attributes

On the right-hand side of the tab, the Curve attributes can be edited for observation point (s) selected in the Observation points, Budget domains and  Content domains list.

The Value describes an observed value or time series of the chosen process variable, while the Interval allows the input of a confidence interval for the observation. The confidence interval is used to determine whether the calculated value for the process variable is within acceptable bounds, and can be visualized together with the deviation of calculated and observed values.

The Value can be time-constant values (steady-state or transient simulation), or time-series (transient simulation). Switching between the two input modes for constant or time-series input is done by clicking on the icon in the input box or by right-clicking on the icon and choosing the mode from the context menu (similar to the input box in the Editor toolbar).

In practical cases with a large number of observation points, the reference values are typically not typed manually. When converting point maps to observation points, also the reference values can be imported from the attribute data of the map.
