Budget-History Charting

Each stored node selection in the Selections panel can be used as a separate budget group for which the summed calculated rate and period budget can be displayed as time series in the Rate-Budget and Period-Budget charts, e.g., to calculate the flow balance along a river (section), or to determine drained water volumes in dewatering scenarios, etc. Budget-history charting needs to be activated before a simulation starts.

The steps to calculate and record time series for the rate and period budgets for a stored node selection are:

  1. Select a number of nodes using the tools in the Selection toolbar.

  2. Store the active node selection via Store Current Selection in the context menu of the Selections panel or in the context menu of the active view.

  3. At any time before the simulation is started, open the context menu of the stored node selection in the Selections panel by right click and select Budget-History Charting and one of the budgeting options to calculate fluid/mass/heat quantities that enter or leave the model at the selected locations or the storage change.

The Budget-History Charting mode can report the Rate and Period values in three modes: net quantities, inflow quantities and outflow quantities. The last two recording modes are available only with FEFLOW 10.0 and onwards. Charts will be available for the rate-budget histories and the period-budget histories (the latter being the temporal integration of the first), depending on the Problem Class settings:

There are two reasons of using the charting mode compared to applying the Rate-Budget and Period-Budget panels: On the one hand, it allows the display of charts, on the other hand the complete chart data are saved in the results file (*.dac), even if not all time steps of the simulation are stored.

Export of Chart Curves

The curves for rate and period budget can be exported after the simulation run or whenever a results file is loaded.

  1. Open the context menu of the Rate-Budget or Period-Budget History with a right click into the respective chart and select Properties.

  2. Select one or multiple curves, holding the <Ctrl> key while clicking on the curve names and then click on the Save button to export the curves. The available export formats are *.pow, *.dbf, *.dat and *.txt.

Definition of Budget Groups from the Observation Data dialog

In FEFLOW 10.0, the Observation Data dialog offers also the possibility to easily define nodal selections as budget groups. Multiple selections can be chosen. The Budget type (In, Out or Net) is assigned via the multiple check-boxes on the lower right section of the dialog.

Per definition only one recording mode (in, out or net) is allowed per nodal selection. In case that multiple modes  are wished to be recorded, FEFLOW project needs to be prepared with additional selections.
